Damn I'm all late on this. Great post!

I love to have this discussion with people who went to white schools. They always try to bring it to HBCU's offering a low quaility of education. But the argument is ended when I ask, "Well why are we, you with your white school education and me with my 'darkie' degree, sitting at the same table?"

As for us having choices now, have we learned anything from all those sit-ins begging to sit at the Piggly-Wiggly malt shop counter?? So soon as massa let us have a seat, we flocked leaving the things we'd built in our own communities. I sure hope this doesn't happen with HBCU's too. I'm going to do my part. I'm already training my eggs now so that when they meet the right sperm and become a human of college age, they will get their education from some HBCU. They can do what they want for graduate school.

I'm delurking just to tell you that this post made me smile.

#7 alone made me giggle because I graduated from one of the HBCUs in Dixie. Thank you for bringing attention to the level of diversity that exists.

I agree that some are quite annoying when mentioning their allegiance to their alma mater, but that also exists among elite Ivy League schools as well.

Thanks for the post!

I don't know,*some* people that go to *some* HBCU's tend to be a smidge overboard and condescending with their school love, but I don't think I could get away with the same thing...umm, I guess it's more of the nuance...I think certainly some of it is more about people being people, and at certain levels, wanting to feel like they are the hot stuff in the room. And I do respect Spelman and Morehouse for the institutions they are (my grandpa and grandma met and married down there), but they are not the end all and be all. and the beauty is, we can choose nowadays...

Interesting post. Being from the West Coast, I don't know a lot of folks that went to an HBCU. Too many schools right here in California to choose from.

But my experience at a state school here was a nightmare. I think I ma have enjoyed Spelman or Howard.

My daughter has attended all white schools since 7th grade and I can't convince her to even apply to an HBCU. She won't even consider a school in the south.

@Suga: I'll do more to shout out Clark. I actually didn't take any classes at Clark. I just sat on the Strip and oggled all the women that walked by like it was a non-stop fashion show. Man, I loved Clark. I did take a class at Morris Brown though.

@c-dot: My last comment about "being better than you" wasn't so much about going to an HBCU moreso than it was me being me. I'm an asshole like that at times...kind of.

But I have heard folks that went to white schools say that some of us HBCU folks, specifically the AUC, Howard, and I suppose A&T/FAMU/etc. breed are judgemental and since I'm not really aware of that, I'd like to know more about that if you don't mind.

Like how are "we" judgemental?

Panama

Great post dude! I just has this conversation with my cousin who is just HAS to attend GA Tech.

I kept trying to tell this little dude there is nothing like an HBCU experience. But hell I ended up telling him dont worry you will be at every AUC party/event you can!

Homecoming is definately the highlight. You get to catch up and keep networking with 'ninjas who can read'

Oh and I am kind of hurt you didnt mention Clark Atlanta once in your post. Just like a Morehouse Man, dude you know you took at least 2 classes on our campus during your matriculation! Show my alma mata some love next time.

I concur. My years at CAU were definitely the best years of my life thus far and it was truly a learning experience I don't think I would've received from any non-HBCU institution.

Good post dude.

I just don't understand the *judgement* that comes from people that went to HBCU's. You do your thing, I'll do mine. I grew up in DC around plenty of black people that read, so I'm not short on that end. I wouldn't give my Duke education up for anything. That being said, some people need the HBCU experience, I just didn't see as something I wanted to do. Howard homecoming is fun, but we have a blast at ours to, lol.

@Lindsay-Lee: I might actually write about this past homecoming, but the thing is, it was just like every other homecoming, except minus you all. We hit up the Ruby Friday's on Peachtree, tailgate, parties...the usual. Uncle Ricky's punch was there; me, Big Frank dog, and The Doc were toast (as is usual)...it was kind of just like old times except you folks weren't there.

What I'm basically saying is that you and your friends suck!!!!
